Letting go of Friendships

Do you have a hard time letting go? I know I do. When Ben and I were first married, I was struggling with the loss of old friendships. My social life in college was lacking, if there at all. My best friends from high school were either distanced physically or socially, as we were all trying to find where we fit and where we were going in life. As I was confiding in Ben with these lonely feelings, he shared some insight that I wish I had understood better at the time. What he said was that life is like a train ride and we are a passenger along with everyone else in life. We get to know and love many of the passengers on the train, and we are sad when it is their stop to get off. Sometimes we never see them again. Sometimes they board the train again and we can reconnect. I didn't want to hear it at the time, but I have found it as a comforting truth as I have gone through life. Dare To Do Hard Things

What's the hardest thing you have ever done? What pushed you into doing that thing? Did you regret it? Was it something you chose to do? Woukd you do it again based on lessons learned or results brought about? Chopping firewood is definitely not the hardest thing I have ever done. In fact, it is one of my easier chores I have done. But, if you would have asked me a week ago if I could chop the giant pile of logs outside my house, I would have adamately told you no. In fact, I did tell Ben that no, I could not chop the firewood. Life is not always easy on a family homestead when your partner in crime travels a lot. Here is how our conversation the other night went: B: Hey, how are you? A: Fine. How are you? B: Tired. Going to bed. Pretty standard stuff for us when Ben is out if town. I was not expecting the next question. B: Why haven't you been chopping the firewood? For the Joy of Living

For the joy of living. What does it mean? It means enjoying the things of daily life, and therefore finding joy in life. I think we seek happiness far too often in events, outings, things, and grandeous goals. I think we seek happiness far too little in the small every day happenings that seem trivial, inconsequential, or even troublesome. Enjoy the little things. I enjoy hanging the laundry. It turns a to- do list checkmark into a relaxing, quiet, therapeutic time. A time to meditate. A time to feel the cool, damp cloth on my skin. A time to slow down and find the joy in life instead of just getting the chore done. When I'm using a dryer, I enjoy folding the warm clothes into neat, fresh and clean piles declaring a new start, a rebirth, a chance to be worn again and live another day. Ok, so I don't always enjoy washing the dishes... especially if I have fallen behind to the point where my toddler declares a warning to me that "the dirty dishes
